PRAIRIE LAKES PARTNERS WITH NATIONAL KIDNEY FOUNDATION
POSTED: APR 18, 2012
A bike ride, run or leisurely stroll could end up going the extra mile towards the detection and prevention of a disease that affects one in nine South Dakota residents.
Over 150 people are expected to step up for the inaugural Watertown Kidney Walk, Fun Run and Bike-a-thon to raise funds and support those who already have chronic kidney disease and the millions more at risk. The noncompetitive walk, run and ride will be held on Saturday, May 5. The bike-a-thon starts at 8 a.m., the run at 8:30 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. Registration for all events takes place at the Bramble Park Zoo Shelter.
“A short walk may help someone take a lifesaving step. Anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease is at risk for kidney disease,” said Dr. Tina Melanson, a nephrologist at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System, the Kidney Walk’s presenting sponsor. “Funds raised from the Kidney Walk will fund a free kidney health screening to be held in South Dakota, a toll-free patient information hotline, online support groups, patient workshops, organ donation advocacy, professional education, a top-notch, informative website (www.kidney.org) and more.”
The event will also feature music, kids games with prizes, a health and wellness tent, complimentary massages, a barbershop performance, visit from a fire truck and more. Participants are encouraged to come to the Bramble Park Zoo Shelter from 9 to 10 a.m. to participate in these activities. Following the walk a healthy lunch will be provided by Hy-Vee.
To participate in the bike-a-thon, run or walk sign up online at www.kidneywalk.org or call the National Kidney Foundation at 1-800-596-7943. On site registration will also be available. All bikers and runners receive a T-shirt for their $25 ($35 day-of) registration and all walkers who raise $100 will receive an official “Kidney Walk T-shirt.” Raise more and win additional prizes.
The National Kidney Foundation, Inc. (NKF) is the major voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing kidney disease, improving the health and well-being of the 26 million individuals and families affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
