Emotional Eating
Emotional Eating

The holiday season is typically celebrated with good friends, family, and plenty of food. This can make it difficult for some to stay consistent with their healthy diet and lifestyle. When counseling patients for weight management, we talk about understanding why you’re eating.

Emotional eating can quickly sabotage weight loss or weight maintenance efforts. Try to pinpoint the emotions that cause you to turn to food. Come up with a list of things you can do when you are feeling those emotions instead of eating. Things I typically suggest are going for a walk, reading a book, or calling a friend. For more information on emotional eating and why we do it, visit the American Diabetes Association website.

If you are struggling with emotional eating and don’t know where to turn, call the Registered Dietitians at Prairie Lakes at 605-882-7874.
