Prairie Lakes Healthcare System (PLHS) has named Watertown area native Heather Brewster as the new Director of Quality and Risk Management.

Brewster holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from SDSU and has worked in the Critical Care Unit at PLHS for ten years. She believes in safe and compassionate environments for patients.  As a Critical Care Nurse she provided nursing care to patients for a variety of critical conditions, including respiratory compromise and diagnostic invasive monitoring.

“I am excited to take this next step in my career as Director of Quality and Risk Management,” said Brewster.  “My staff and I are passionate about quality patient care and experience. We strive to support PLHS in providing safe and effective healthcare to the patients in our community and surrounding areas.”

Three Girl Scouts recently completed two projects to comfort patients at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System.

Olivia Schaefers, Jillian Busch and Madison Park constructed “busy bags” for kids who are patients or visiting a patient long term. The bags, which are color coordinated for different age groups, include items to keep kids occupied. They also created more than 100 crosses as comfort items for PLHS’s pastoral care department. The work was part of the girls’ Silver Project.

Thank you Olivia, Jillian and Madison! Pictured below left to right.

PLHS & CEO Nationally Recognized

Prairie Lakes Healthcare System (PLHS) was recently named one of the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the United States by iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health. This is the second year PLHS received this prestigious honor.

PLHS scored in the top 100 of rural and community hospitals on iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength INDEX®. The INDEX is the industry’s most comprehensive rating of rural providers. It provides the data foundation for the annual Rural Relevance Study and its results are the basis for many of rural healthcare’s most prominent awards, advocacy efforts and legislative initiatives.

“It’s more important than ever that rural hospitals proactively understand and address performance in the areas of cost, quality, outcomes and patient perspective. iVantage’s INDEX was designed to serve as this industry model,” said Michael Topchik, national leader of the Chartis Center for Rural Health. “Across the spectrum of performance indicators, there are rural providers that are writing the blueprint for success as they transition to value-based healthcare. Our analysis shows that this group of top performers exhibits a focused concern for their community needs.”

The Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals play a key role in providing a safety net to communities across America – and the INDEX measures them across eight pillars of hospital strength: Inpatient Share Ranking, Outpatient Share Ranking, Cost, Charge, Quality, Outcomes, Patient Perspectives, and Financial Stability.

Jills portrait 2017 online2“This achievement is very gratifying and represents the unwavering dedication to our mission and the quality of work of our board, medical staff, and employees,” said Jill Fuller, President & CEO. “Receiving this recognition for the second year validates our commitment to develop quality healthcare services that are accessible to our rural region.”
