WATERTOWN, S.D. – November 4, 2024 – Prairie Lakes Healthcare System (PLHS) has been included in Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2025. This prestigious award is presented in collaboration with Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list was announced on October 23rd, 2024, and can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Proximity and access are of the utmost importance when choosing between top hospitals. The America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2025 ranking was created to identify the top hospitals at the state level. Hospitals from all US states were eligible for the ranking and included in the nationwide survey. Four data sources were used for the evaluation: quality metrics data, a nationwide online survey, patient experience, and a voluntary PROMS implementation survey. As a result, the 700 hospitals that scored the highest across these criteria have been included on the list.

PLHS is honored to be recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2025. It reinforces that Prairie Lakes excels in quality of care, has high patient satisfaction, and is one of the leading hospitals in the nation.

“We are honored to be one of the seven South Dakota hospitals recognized in Newsweek’s 2025 list,” said John Allen, President and CEO of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. “This award reflects the exceptional commitment and dedication of our team members and is a motivating reminder of our mission to make a positive impact on those we serve.”

What to Expect When Donating Blood

October 15th was Global Handwashing Day!

This year’s theme, created by Global Handwashing Partnership, was “Why are clean hands still important?” Handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest, most effective ways to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. Clean hands remain a fundamental defense against the spread of infections, illnesses, and harmful germs. Whether in hospitals, schools, or in everyday interactions, practicing handwashing with soap contributes to better health outcomes and a safer world for everyone.

Why are clean hands still important to you?

While significant progress in hand hygiene awareness has been made, maintaining and improving hand hygiene behaviors remains crucial beyond public health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Clean hands remain a fundamental defense against the spread of infections, illnesses, and harmful germs. Whether in hospitals, schools, or in everyday interactions, practicing handwashing with soap contributes to better health outcomes and a safer world for everyone.

The benefits of clean hands

Hand hygiene, whether through handwashing with soap or alcohol-based handrub, can help reduce the transmission of a range of diseases:

  • Handwashing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by 30%.
  • Handwashing with soap can reduce acute respiratory infections by up to 20%.
  • Handwashing with soap plays an important role in reducing the transmission of outbreak-related pathogens such as cholera, Ebola, shigellosis, SARS, hepatitis E, COVID-19, and monkeypox.
  • Hand hygiene is protective against healthcare-associated infections and contributes to reducing the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Proper hand hygiene has also been linked to benefits beyond disease reduction, such as reduced rates of school absenteeism and improvements in wellbeing, dignity, and productivity.

What To Expect When Donating Blood

Just like clothes and shoes, children grow out of their passenger safety seats depending on their height and weight - it has very little to do with age. Many parents and caregivers are uncertain as to when to move a child into either a booster or to a seatbelt.

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) database, nearly three-fourths (74.0%) of all car seats inspected by Child Passenger Safety Technicians in 2023 were improperly installed and used. Yet, a general consumer survey revealed only 1 in 5 parents and caregivers seek expert help installing a car seat or securing a child in a car seat.

The study also found three common misuses:

  • The car seat installation is too loose
  • Not using the tether when installing a forward-facing car seat with either the lower anchors or seat belt
  • The harness is too loose when securing a child in a car seat

CarSeatSafety 01 004

However, when used properly child safety seats account for thousands of saved lived and reduced injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shared the following statistics:

  • In passenger cars, car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers 1 to 4 years old in passenger cars. For infants and toddlers in light trucks, the corresponding reductions are 58% and 59%, respectively.
  • Since 1975, child restraints have saved the lives of an estimated 11,606 children under the age of 5.
  • A recent study found that while most parents and caregivers believe they know how to properly install their car seats, about half (48%) have installed their child’s car seat incorrectly.

PLHS has several Certfified Child Passenger Seat Technicians available by appoint to check a child's safety seat. Car seat checks provide an opportunity to have your infant or toddler car seat checked by trained staff. You will be given an appointment time and should arrive with your seat already installed in your vehicle. Staff will check the seat and have you make any necessary changes to the installation of the seat. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call 605-882-7735.

In the meantime, Safe Kids provides a comprehensive online tool that can help you ensure a child's seat fit properly and when they may be ready to advance to the next step of passenger seat safety.

Influenza (flu) vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the flu viruses that are used to make vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research suggests will be most common during the upcoming season.
